The final plot twist was revealed way too quickly.

I mean... at least Gates to Infinity gave us some time to digest what was happening, and then when it actually does happen the player suddenly thinks "Oh snap. This is it." Here? The partner says "lol i'm mew bye" and then roll credits.

I predicted it'd be them and not you pretty early just based on how much the game tried to parallell Gates. So I had figured, like Gates, it'd be something OTHER than you leave so partner sad. But I expected them to give it a bit of a twist to make it different compared to the Gates version and that he goes was the most likely way to do that. The thing about Mew surprised me a little.

I agree, I didn't even cry at the ending because of the twist. I appreciate what the developers were trying to do, but I don't think it worked with me.

Admittedly I was more shocked than sad at the end. I mean it was sad, and really the whole ending moving as fast as it did felt somewhat more real. Sometimes drastic things happen in life and you don't get time to digest whats going on. anyway, the one thing that I think the game was missing to make the ending sadder was a memory montage like in Sky.

@Majora: But this isn't real life, this is Pokemon. Being able to fully realize what's happening offers more emotion than having it be introduced for 5 seconds and then ending the game right there.

The reveal and departure happened too quick in PSMD. Explorers and especially Gates made the heartbreak much stronger since they stretched it out a bit more. In terms of immediate emotional impact of the ending (to me) Gates > Explorers > PSMD > RT. Although RT was extremely spoiled for me as I played it in 2013 with many spoilers ahead of time and the other 3 were unspoiled and near release.
