    Yes, when electrically charged 'winds' from the sun trickle down into the atmosphere, they excite nitrogen (blue) & oxygen (red, green). As the air 'relaxes', it gives off light, exactly as a fluorescent light does. But the falling curtains of the polar lights are colored! Best seen in winter in very northern & southern countries.
