Can I do multiplayer splitscreen with Gamepad?

when i tried doing splitscreen multiplayer, it said that the gamepad screen can't be on while playing splitscreen. Does that mean I can only play with 2-4 pro controllers, or can i turn off the gamepad screen and play with Gamepad and 1-3 pro controllers?

    thanks, i just figured out you can turn off the gamepad screen in the setting.

    nope, you can use a gamepad but you have to turn off the Gamepad display which you do by tapping the wii u > tv icon at the botton right of the gamepad screen
