How to communicate online?

I have game chat enabled and a USB keyboard plugged in. Also I can't hear anyone if they're using voice chat.

    Can you use your gamepad mic for chat? Also check your opinions menu maybe something is turned of for voice opinions.

    I didn't see any options for voice chat. I prefer text chat instead but I don't know how to get it to work.
