Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U

So I was thinking about this recently. Captain Falcon is just a race car driver, right? How in the world did Nintendo turn him into this beast? He shrugs off Lucina's sword attack as if she were simply throwing a punch! I know he's been in an anime, and I plan to watch that soon. Maybe that has the answers I'm looking for.
