  Choose any hero Pokemon you'd like, but the partner's the hard part. For example, if you choose a Fire type, choose a Grass type; they cover Fire type's weaknesses and Fire types can cover Grass'. This can go with Grass w/ Water and Water w/ Fire. If you are Pikachu, go with Grass or Water, they can decimate Ground types. Riolu needs Pikachu to cover the flying type weakness.

  Also, I'd go with Bulbasaur too. Because he's also Poison-type, he can resist Bug and Poison types, but is weak to Psychic types.

  From a story standpoint, probably someone a bit mischevious as a partner. From a gameplay standpoint, probably a water type to cover your fire weakness. Riolu might beat ice, but would leave both of you weak to psychic. Also it's probably not a good idea to have both members specilize in physical attacks due to the abundance of growl, play nice, intimidate, etc that can show up in early areas.
