disappearing livestock?

whenever i go back to my house after being away for a while, all my animals are gone! i have no idea how they keep getting out. there aren't any places they could jump over the fence, and if wolves got in my cows and chickens would still be there. :\

    It's because you need to be near them or they de-spawn (dissapear)

    Is your fence more than 20x20? If so, mobs can de-spawn if they can wander farther than 20 blocks.

    You need to fence or block them in an area less than 20 square blocks so they don't despawn. Try making it smaller.

    well, i didn't measure it, but now their pen is way smaller than before. i hope this works! ^-^
