    Okay...early steps I see. Look for a red mushroom or better from the ? blocks, that will give you another hit before you lose a life. Wait for the plant to go down and use that pot to go to the other pipe where the arrow is telling you to go through...take it from there. The green mush is a 1up but doesn't help much apart from in certain modes as it doesn't work quite the same as originally.
