    This looks like a somber scene in a comic book. A long panel creates the illusion of time and the negative space gives off an emptiness. If the eye moves from left to right your left with a slow empty build that ends on an emotional point. its great storytelling for the moment your trying to convey, but It works better in a sequential medium.     ...flat. (Profile views often have that effect.) I like that your thinking about negative space but shadow and spotted blacks can help convey the darkness. A scene like this I'd usually draw the reader's eye over with a dark texture like some scratchy nib work or thumb prints to create a gnarled, grizzled, dark ambient feel or even a simple clean black cast showdown across the panel for a softer..

    It's difficult to convey in words. Wish I could draw a response, but Miiverse updates are poo. Your drawings look nice tho. I'd just change the perspective for a standalone piece... Unless this is a part of a comic that I don't know about :D
