Originality

Where do I start... Well, when SmileBASIC was originally released, I was very happy about the copyright system, as it would encourage originality. I thought that it meant that people would create tons of original content, which wasn't as prominent in PTC times. But on Miiverse, it's very clear that it would not. So many people use the "change the sprites" cheat. (cont.)

  • I see so many people wanting and making shameless clones of games, whether or not they post it. Oftentimes, they do post it but just simply change the sprites. I'm saddened to see workarounds to originality, but it happens all the time. just because you're not violating the art's copyright doesn't excuse you from being unoriginal. Thank you for your time.

Yeah, it sucks that original work is overshadowed by "here's my knockoff of X popular game", but I wouldn't be too hard on folks. The fact is, design is hard. If you're new to programming, it can be a very useful exercise just to see if you can figure out how to make a game that you're already familiar with.

Some is good and fine, but I see too much of it. If it was done less, I'd be fine with it, but I feel that there is too much of it. I think that at least making it with your own art and characters but still mostly the same game WITHOUT just replacing the art is better, but hey, that's just my 3 posts so far.

One of my favorite things to do with PC and SB is to put some of my favorite games in my 3DS that I know I'll never see any other way. I like Yahtzee, so I started putting together a version of it in SB. I posted a screenshot because I'm kind of proud of the interface I put together and I want to show it off. Sadly, I know I can't post the finished product publicly.

And the sad fact is, people don't have much motivation to bring their A game to this platform. This language is a toy. It has a limited audience. You can't sell what you make. As much fun as it is to program my 3DS, all you really get from it is personal satisfaction. If you want to make a great original game, this isn't the place to do it.

Yeah, I agree that it's a little disheartening to see the community so caught up in "SOMEONE MAKE FNAF AND UNDERTALE". The only thing you can really do is find and encourage the people who ARE doing something different. And, of course, contribute yourself if you can.

I wholly agree, but I think that it's still sad that there isn't as much originality as I think that there should be. I don't mean a full, huge, amazing game that is worthy of a 7-8/10 rating on a professional platform, I just mean that you should at least have some originality, such as having original names (Agar SB! FNaF SB! GMod SB!) and use more of a spinoff style than a clone style.

  • Same. Remaking a game is great for practice, but I see far too many people doing it, and you know they're not just doing it for practice. On top of that, beginners are coming in and trying to make GTA and Minecraft as their first project. They "announce" it immediately after making a half-functioning title screen, and then a bunch of people actually believe they are going to finish the game.

  • Oh, and BTW @Ed, Yatzy is actually a public domain game. The name "Yahtzee" is copyrighted by Hasbro, but they don't own the Yatzy game itself, like I said it's apparently public domain (According to Google, anyways). So you can actually publish it under the name "Yatzy"! It really isn't any different than making, say, checkers or chess.

  • The question for me is, if you make something original, do you get to keep complete copyright for it, or is it subject to Smile taking it or somebody else because you are using the SB app? I'm learning to program BASIC, and I want to make original work, but I want 100% copyright for it, so that's stunted me from making any original stuff and publishing, cuz Idk if I keep my rights.

I think you keep copyright, but you give a license to people when you upload it to modify it with credit. I don't fully know though, I just hope that nobody's a jerk lol.

  • Hm... It seems I must be careful until I know for certain... Thank you for answering, I appreciate it. I'm just planning on making a simple H&S sidescroller, but I wish to keep copyright for the attack movement and characters. I'm certain I'm safe with the copyright on my characters, but for the game program I suspect is subject to copying. Oh well, I'm more concerned with the characters anyway.

  • If you have any questions about that, your best bet is probably to email SmileBOOM.
