Wow. I found one awesome Japanese word. It's "arigatameiwaku", and it means this: "an act someone does for you that you didn’t want to have them do and tried to avoid having them do, but they went ahead and did it anyway, determined to do you a favour. Then things went wrong and caused you a lot of trouble; yet in the end social convention obliged you to act grateful." :)

  • Favor, not favour. I'm not British.

  • I'm assuming that last kanji reads 'chan'? No clue about the first...

  • I understand the meaning of this word. This kind of thing has happened to me before, and because I don't understand the point of social customs it frustrates me. Why don't we have a word that means this...?

  • Conventions, not customs, Matt. Conventions are the part of social interactions that aren't illogical, such as being polite and reasonable as opposed to being PC and whatnot. But I don't fake things. I will flat out tell someone that they really messed things up, ducking around the truth is something someone with a desire to find it should never do.

  • That's really sweet. I know too many people who do that and don't ask for anything back, and it really means a lot to me. Now if I could only pronounce the word. ;)

  • The first kanji says blue, Christian. Good word, Elzo, that'd be useful in English.

  • When learning another language, it's super fun to find words that don't exist in English.

  • @Blake Nah, being polite in this situation is pretty illogical. The person is scrèwing things up so the only reason not to tell them is to not hurt their poor little feelings.

  • Christian: The first Kanji is blue, the second one is "kun". Yes, why isn't there an English word for this? Noelle: It's as simple as this. "A" is pronounced Ah, "I" is "ee", "u" is "oo", "e" is "eh", and "o" is "oh". More or less, that's the pronunciation, and the consonant are the same as in English except for the r. Just use a Spanish r, and that's pretty much it. :) I found another-

  • Matt, our views on social activities of any form align quite well. I'd certainly be rather angry, and do get rather angry, when I'm in trouble because some idi0t messed things up. I try to not act irrationally in anger, though... But of course, there's no way I would feel obliged to sugar-coat someone's stup!dity. Sorry, conventions, you're not THAT logical.

    Yeahs2
  • Heh, I'm not sure how you guys see me because a lot of times my real personality comes across warped a bit through text, but trust me Blake, I may get frustrated easily, but it takes an enourmous effort to anger me. :P Anyway, we agree that there's no real reason npto hold back the frustration in this instance.

  • It takes a lot to physically anger me. I have younger brothers, so I should think so. But that doesn't mean on the inside. I get quite ticked off when someone messes up on something I work on, or something like that. But I don't exactly show it. Why waste time sugarcoat something? It just makes things complicated.

  • In general, I completely agree that sugarcoating things is pointless, but there are some instances where doing that is safer to keep sanity or someone alive. In those instances, I'll do whatever I need to. There's only one person who can make me angry right away, but other than that, it's nearly impossible to make me angry.

  • How silly of me to forget the difference between frustration and anger... But yes, I would be in the same boat as the both of you. I try npto entrust what the logical part of my brain should be doing to the part that defines motivation and value. Which, of course, all three of you do as well.

A couple reasons why it would be important to consider what other people's reactions to how you act and react are that you could be wrong about something, or could be suggesting something that is unreasonable, that you don't realize is off in the moment.

  • Hey, now I know the literal meaning of this word! "Appreciated annoyance".
