    It's because it is very contreversial. This game is in Japan and other countries that may not allow same gender mariage, and you don't have complete control over who your islander dates/marries..... so some straights and gays may have a bit of a problem.

    I'm not sure why it wouldn't be appropriate for children since marriage is marriage, its legal in the U.S and other places and should be allowed, but you still have religions who don't like gay marriage and sue Nintendo or not buy the game, causing in a loss of money, which Nintendo would not risk.

    I've read somewhere it was not because of moral issues, but for technical reasons - at least in regards to the predecessor for the DS, which was Japan exclusive. Also, Nintendo doesn't have any issues with same-gender romance anyway, considering the most recent Fire Emblem games offer this option as well. So it wouldn't be much of a deal to add something like "orientation" into the game.

    Other than gender nothing. It's just that in most cultures that persisted to this day, the concept as a whole was deemed sinful, and therefore was frowned upon.

    In my religion, yes, it is a sin against God, CHOOSING to be the other gender, because God made you in his own image and kindness. Being born attracted to the same gender is NOT a sin.
