Splatoon

I've been complaining, practically since Splatoon came out, about nearly, if not every, team I'm on not understanding the basic concept of Covering Fire. Today, I finally think I might know why. The VAST majority of Lobbies I'm in are otherwise all Japanese. Not sure why I NEVER GET TO PLAY WITH AMERICAN teams, but that might be the problem. Japanese Military Tactics may not include Covering Fire

  • So, let me explain it. Not every shot fired has to be done to kill an enemy. Sometimes, taking time to kill an enemy may be a waste of time. Covering Fire is not shooting to kill. It's more of a distraction. You can spray ammo to cover an area, to deter enemies from going there. You can spray indiscriminately in the direction of enemy fire to both scatter them & allow an ally to get through.

  • Covering Fire is one strategy Splatoon was made for. I use it all the time. I am constantly spraying in towards enemies or enemy ink, not to kill, but to force them to stop & move. Frequently, Covering Fire does net me most of my Splats (mostly in matches too chaotic to get my Splatling set up to aim & charge properly), since I'm faster, somehow. I also fire ink over an ally, to protect them.

  • If your enemy has to move, it creates gaps in their formation, without slowing you down. It can cause real havok to enemy organization, advances, & many other things. It's important to learn when Covering Fire is sufficient, & when gettingbthe kill is more useful. I NEVER spend more than 15 or 20 seconds on a single kill. There's too many more important things that require my attention.

  • Spraying ink over & ahead of the Rainmaker or Tower: Covering Fire. Spraying Ink indiscriminately to either side of a Zone, when you have control: Covering Fire. Heck, just spraying ink blindly into a Zone can technically end up as Covering Fire. I also frequently blind fire into enemy ink I come across. Too flush out or Splat hiding enemies, create paths for my team, & cover enemy routes .

  • My Splat count isn't always the highest, but forcing the enemy to regroup, without wasting time to leave my post (I tend towards Zone Defense --nothing to do with Splat Zones, but Splat Zones requires a form of it-- frequently turns the tide of battle, or stops an enemy rally cold. Covering Fire, holding key locations & Teamwork are key concepts in this game. It frustrates me to rarely see 'em.

  • In Splatoon, uniquely, Covering Fire also expands your territory or creates a new route. Especially in Rainmaker. When I'm blindly shooting out ahead of the Rainmaker, not only does it make it hard for enemies to hit him, due to both causing them danger to stand in the line of fire & obscure the ally, but it also creates a path for them to advance through, without needing to fire to make their own

  • here's some tips: you can practice with a friend. or if you are, don't play at night. but if it's YOUR connection... I can't help that anyway I hope these were useful, I've only been here since last year. T3T

  • I've had the game since launch. And played the 4 pre-launch Testfires. I play at all hours. At no time do I generally play with players whose names I can read. Outside of Splatfest, of course. I think it's more to do with my Rank. Since October, I've been in and out of S Rank (probably average being S longer than when bad teams knock me below S). I know there have to be American S Rankers.

  • And I can't practice with Friends who never play. Or are so far below my skill level I'd have create a serious handicap, AND use weapons I'm bad with, just so it'd be more fair than my full strength with my main.
