PSA: If you are starting out this game and you are playing on a 3ds, internet play is not supported on your system (unfortunately). You can play in multiplayer with others in your close vicinity, but cannot get on network mode. If you also have a Wii U, there is a way to get on to the internet using a LAN cable, and a free Relay Packet program from eShop; otherwise you are stuck hunting solo :(

    You need to buy the $20 USB to ethernet adapter, and run an ethernet cable from your router to the Wii U. Considering that doing so may either be difficult or impossible, depending on location, I'd say if you're going to buy a Wii U to play MH3U online, just spend $10 more & buy the Wii U version of MH3U. You can freely transfer save data between the two versions, no hardware or software needed.
