    The key to using Gunlance is to balance thrust attacks with shelling attacks while taking advantage of your shield. The shells you fire don't go far, so fire at close range. Firing shells and using Wyvernfire does eat up weapon sharpness, so always keep a supply of whetstones with you. Make full use of the GL's attacks.     fire a shell after you stab up. This is handy to try and bring down a flying monster that just barely left the ground. I've shot down a few fleeing Rathalos using said technique.
