It is a Hyrule Loach. It is a rare and hard to catch fish that appears sometimes in the fishing pond.

Google "Zelda Wiki Hyrule Loach" for more information. Too much about it to describe in a few words here.

A follower of mine told me about that and I thought it was a myth, but I know it's not now! :O

To make the loach appear, enter fishing pond, pay 20 rupees, see if loach is by the lilypads. If not, leave pond and do it again. Pay 20 rupees each time you enter.

After doing this a maximum of 4 times the loach will appear. So, in essence it sort of has a 1 in 4 chance of showing up (assuming you pay).

The Lillipads are on the west side of the pond. In other words, approach the pond and go to the left. The loach can be hard to see it can be UNDER the lillipads.

If the loach is in the pond it always starts by the lillipads. You can catch it easiest there. If you SCARE it, it goes to the center of the pond and won't leave there for about 15 minutes.

So, if Link scares the fish away, leave the Loach alone, it will EVENTUAlLY return to the Lillipads and you can try again.

I probably spent over an hour. The Zelda Wiki told me to "wait" and let it return to the Lillipads. I was trying to catch it when it was in the center of the pond and that is nearly impossible.

Once it was back at the lillipads I might have gotten lucky, got it in about 3 minutes once I saw it there. It was my 2nd or 3rd cast and it bit my line, yay!

I was relieved. I didn't want to turn my game off until I caught it.

and here I was assuming that the sinking lure was still in here somewhere... catching that thing outta be less stressful in the remake...

Not sure what you're talking about, King Ignus. The sinking lure is still available. It being necessary to catch the loach is just a myth, in all versions.
