@red, im pretty sure that the homing attack is sonics ability since ive seen him do it in cutscenes of sonic generations and sonic colors. so yeah, its not really a game mechanic, its also his ability

mario has to be very stategic to land a hit on sonic, which once again is a hard thing to do. sonic can easiy pounce on him with a homing attack or spindash.

mario's attacks are slow, so he wont be able to hit sonic who would be running all over the place.

Im not saying mario would go down right away but defeating sonic would be extremely difficult due to extreme conditions of dodging his speed attacks and even landing hits
