People say Mario has no dark side, and that he's completely good... in Super Mario 64, he picks up a baby penguin, stealing it from its mother, and then throws it off of a cliff, killing it.

    Yes, but Mario still does it. Also, it turns out that all of the bricks in the original Mario Bros. were Toads turned into bricks, and every time Mario punches a brick, he kills a Toad.

    No. In the game universe, the player doesn't exist, it's just the character doing stuff. That's like saying Link didn't defeat Ganondorf, or Cloud didn't defeat Sepiroth.

    @Sean No, they're not okay. Sure, most of them come back to life, but Mario has already smashed many blocks before rescuing Peach, and has therefore killed hundreds of toads before the curse was lifted. Mario HAS done wrong. Of course, he probably didn't even know he was slaughtering hundreds of toads.

    Yes, you do. There are certain spots in which you HAVE to smash bricks in order to proceed. And again, everything that the player does is Mario's fault in the game world.

    @Garret: Nowhere is it specified wether or not the Toad blocks smashed are safe or not. It's also not specified if all of the blocks are Toads or just some of them are. Further more, I doubt Nintendo still considers this story cannon. Mario is just a friendly, simple character that's not meant to be evil.
