  • STORY: The story ended up being classic Nintendo fare. In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wario tried to take over Mario's castle, but ended up failing. Following the events of SML2, Wario decides to steal the Black Sugar Pirates' treasure and spend it on a castle bigger than Mario's to make him jealous. Nothing too fancy here, story-wise. Moving on...

  • GAMEPLAY: At first glance, Wario Land looks to be just a generic Mario platformer with Wario tacked on to it. Fortunately, the game proves to be a very different kind of platformer, with some levels being very exploration-based. The gameplay revolves more around Wario's other abilities as opposed to jumping. Pressing B performs the "Shoulder Rush", a king of charging attack used for most puzzles.

  • GAMEPLAY (2): The other element of gameplay is Wario's ability to pick up enemies and toss em' around at other enemies. Very, very useful and is used in clever ways in some levels. Also, the bosses can really be a pain at times. Especially Bobo! Overall, the gameplay is probably part of why I love this game so much.

  • PRESENTATION: Wario in general is just a very entertaining character. And there's no doubt that he'd have no personality in Wario Land: SML3! From the scene where Wario comically loses his hat to his hilarious face when he dies, this game has a fantastic presentation, especially for being a platformer title on the Game Boy!

  • GRAPHICS: Wario Land's spritework is some of the best on the Game Boy, if not THE best. All of the sprites are very large, as well as detailed, and are very fluidly animated (especially Wario himself). It just doesn't get much better than this! There are also very few graphical hiccups as opposed to many other GB titles.

  • SOUND/MUSIC: The developers were obviously trying to make Wario Land incredibly detailed sound-wise. There are so many little details, such as the sound of Wario walking or the 'swoosh' sound when Wario throws an enemy. The game's main theme is also very catchy, and even though most of the songs in the game are just remixes of that same theme, I still love it!

  • REPLAY VALUE: Due to the fact that the game has multiple alternate endings, the replay value of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 is very high. It took me three playthroughs to get the best ending, and it's still fun to play.

  • OVERALL: I give Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 a... 8.8! Highly recommended for anyone looking for a classic to pick up on the VC!
