Question

I can not seem to cut off a normal rathian or a pink rathian's tail off! Every single time I hit the tail my weapon just bounces back because when I finally trip her over her tail moves too much and i cant get a solid hit on the tail to cut it off. Any tips? [ I'm willing to use different weapons to do it] X(

By any chance with a gunlance do you keep stabing the back side of the tail [ the soft part not covered in scales] to cut it off

yep, just don't stab the tip of the tail, or the part where it joins rathian's body. Anywhere else on the tail will work as far as cutting it off.

Barroth armor ...She is the only high rank can face and kill without a problem...I failed the last quest with her because I was always aiming 4 the tail....Do I need to change weapons?

Well, I'm glad your weapon is sufficient. Ok, so there are some good tips mentioned earlier. Like attacking her legs to trip her so her tail is on the ground. It'll still be tricky to hit, but memorize the tail's rhythm, and you'll get some good hits in. Using flash bombs on her while she's airborne is another good way to bring her flat on the ground.

Finally, you may already know this, but you can stab your lance straight up into the air. Press X + A to thrust straight up, and you can press A again during the thrust to fire a shell. Try using this move when she is standing on the ground with her tail raised.

Regarding other weapons, the switch axe in axe mode and the long sword have the best reach, but both weapons have completely different dynamics compared to GL and HH. With a long sword, you always want to be on the offensive, and dodging is critical because you can't block. You'll be relying heavily on one combo, which will raise the sword's spirit gauge, which boosts attack when raised.

The switch axe has an axe and a sword mode, and you'll want to master AND use BOTH. Some people will tell you to only use sword mode, but you won't use the SA to full capacity if you do. Axe mode's attacks are slow, awkward, and have good reach. Sword mode's attacks are fairly fast, fluid, with about the same reach as a GS.

A good strategy with SA is to attack a monsters legs in axe mode,then use sword mode when they trip. For example, you could attack rathian's legs to trip her in axe mode, while hitting her tail when the chance arises. When she falls, switch to sword mode amd slice that tail up. You can also morph between modes while attacking; you don't need to be standing still to switch modes.

I'll have you read the hunters notes for basic controls, but I'll post how to switch during attacks. In axe mode, press X while moving forward to do a front thrust attack, then tap R button TWICE to morph to sword. In sword mode, press A to do a side slash, at the end of the slash, tap R button TWICE to morph to axe.

So, if you choose to use a different weapon, practice with it before trying it out on Ragin Pink. You could even try it on a low rank rathian (Ragin Green? xD) to see how you like it. Just remember: LS, always move, always attack. SA: Use BOTH modes to get the most out of it. Good luck, and let me know what you do, amd how it works out.

Actually I have just recently used a switch axe! I dont think,it'll work 4 me though...So I'm going to practice in moga woods at night with a gunlance so I can practice cutting ragin pink's tails off XD Thanks hawk eye !
