    What exactly is the function/purpose of clans in a game like Monster Hunter? It just strikes me as pointless when there is no competition involved.

    actually there can be competition in the form of time trials/speed runs on arena; best times show up on guild card. I can see guilds having a competition over that. Give a day & a monster, then compare results. You can have defeated monster size comparisons, too...like a fishing tournament, but thats more random/for fun, as it isnt dependent on skill so much as what the game decides to give you.
