Huh. I think I found the armor, as mentioned in a guide I glanced through. Supposedly, it's a rare item (though it doesn't give rare effects); image in spoilered comment, as I'm on the fifth field.

    To give credit where due, that guide is by Chauzu on GameFAQs. [The guide also mentions that you can cross blood-red ponds with blue sandals, so it bears mentioning that it's been reported long before. It was just that I happened to test it on my own before reading that part, though.]
