how do i get just a simple 2d board with staunton pieces so i can play the computer, online opponents never make a move.

    Choose play (not play online) from the main menu. You can then choose board and chess set. Online, BTW, is intended to be "by post/correspondence" style, not "live". Games *can* progress back and forth like a live match, but I find that very rare. Most games take as many days as total moves, give or take.

    i do not see a 2d board option from board and pieces set, only 3d boards and sets. am i missing something?

    Sorry, misunderstood you. I don't think there is a 2D board, but you can change the camera angle to top-down.
