    TORI BIRD SHOGI is played on a 7 by 7 board of 49 squares, kanji-character pieces versus alternative kanji-character pieces, each player has 8 swallows, 1 falcoln, 1 left quail, 1 right quail, 2 pheasants, 2 cranes, and 1 Phoenix. TORI SHOGI captured pieces may be returned back onto the playing board!
