    SHOGI (SHO-ghee) JAPANESE CHESS is played on a 9 by 9 board of 81 squares, kanji-character pieces versus alternative kanji-character pieces, each player has 9 pawns, 1 bishop, 1 rook, 2 lances, 2 knights, 2 silver generals, 2 gold generals, and 1 King. SHOGI captured pieces can be placed back onto the playing board!

    DESCENT CHESS is played on an 8 by 8 chessboard of 64 squares, white pieces versus black pieces, each player has 13 reserve pieces, 2 pawns, and 1 King. Each player, on their turn, may place a reserve piece anywhere on their own 4 horizontal ranks, or may move a piece. DESCENT CHESS seems to be the breakthrough chess variant the tired, old chess players are searching for.
