So, I just saw "Earth To Echo". Honestly, There's just too much to say. Between being a mindless E.T. clone, to the COMPLETELY 1-dimensional bad guys, it was just... explosion. That said, it wasn't all bad. The acting was good, and (some of) the plot was decent. Not to mention they made a smart choice for the ending, which was executed really well. (More in Comments)

The bad guys are ALL 1-dimensional idiots who serve no purpose to the story other than to chase the children around. The kids, however, are (mostly) likable, albeit with very little conflict between characters, new revelations, or etc. Actually, scratch that. There is one scene, but it fail miserably, to the point where my LITTLE BROTHER asked, mid-movie, "So why are they fighting?"

It was handled very poorly. The ending provides the only REAL emotional moment. INCLUDING when, (Arguably major spoiler alert ahead)

I noticed one very specific thing over the sound of me pulling my hair out. Does that ENTIRE paragraph, with the exception of me talking about how non-convincing it is, sound familiar? Because if it doesn't, you need to get your butt off this chair and watch E.T. right now. MAN, was that angering, with E.T. being one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE movies of all time, ever.

The difference is, that E.T. did a good job of making me CARE. For the plot, characters, relationships, everything, and was hand-crafted by one of the best to make us care. This? Nononononono, not at ALL. The main story is interesting, but beyond that, zip.

And, finally, the CGI ranges from decent to... not decent.

So, my final verdict is that, while kids won't notice the difference between a movie like E.T., and Earth to Echo, ADULTS, ones who know movies inside and out, certainly will. So while enjoyable, I'm afraid I'm going to have to give this movie about a 60%. 3 Stars. Etc.

Also, this movie is one of those videocam films, so if you have motion sickness, stay away from the front on this one. And also, sorry about the stream of consciousness/less organized-type format here, but I was in a bit of a hurry, and didn't have much time to think everything through.

  • to me it seemed more like a super 8 clone which was already very similar to the goonies

  • Haven't seen Super 8, but it looks similar (with the alien not trying to eat everyone). But the resemblances to E.T. are almost rage-inducing.

  • The difference being, in E.T., I actually cared.
