    Tell them while it may be a grind, that's not the whole point. Fighting monsters never gets old, and some upgrades taking rare drops just makes those upgrades all the more satisfying and special.

    If they think it's a grind, they're not having fun, and if it's not fun they shouldn't be playing. Find other fun stuff to do with them that they enjoy, and find other people to play MH3U with.
