  • 50,000 years ago the reapers tried to make a new reaper from the DNA of the protheans but they were not suitable. Instead, near the end of their cycle, the reapers began corrupting captured protheans.

  • The reapers indoctrinated the protheans, as time went on their mental & physical ability failed, the reapers compensated, adding cybernetics. Over several cloned generations the Collectors were born.

  • The reapers set the Collectors against the protheans. They assisted the reapers in their harvest until the entire empire was destroyed. Then they clensed the galaxy of clues of the prothean's legacy.

  • The Collectors are mindless drones controlled by a Collector General residing in a base in the galactic core. The reaper called Harbinger controls the Collector General, directing the Collector race.

  • As the next cycle flurished the Collectors continued to monitor and study the various races' evolution. The Collectors would venture from their base so rarely most races considered them merely a myth.

  • But the races of the lawless Terminus Systems occasionally had dealings with the Collectors, trading live specimens the Collectors required for experiments, receiveing advanced technology in exchange.

  • These specimens had odd qualifications like quarians who never left the Migrant Fleet, or a group of left handed salarians. In recent years the Collectors became primarily interested in human biotics.

  • This interest peaked in 2183 when the Collectors attacked and destroyed the Normandy killing Shepard. After he was gone, they spent two years abducting entire human colonies in the Terminus Systems.

  • In 2185, Shepard was revived by the Illusive Man to fight the Collectors. Harbinger had been interested in obtaining Shepard's DNA, possessing the drones, Harbinger instructed the body be preserved.

  • Shepard was able to lead a team through the Omega 4 Relay in the Terminus System, no ship had ever returned before. It led to the Collector Base in the galactic core. They landed and boarded the base.

  • Shepard discovered that the Collectors were gathering human DNA in order to grow a human reaper. They sent ships to colonies to retrieve humans, then they melted them down, and fed it into the larva.

  • Once the reaper larva was destroyed Shepard was able to kill every Collector on board the base, including the Collector General and return through the Omega 4 Relay. The Collectors were finished.

  • However, as long as Harbinger and the reapers exist the Collectors aren't completely gone. A much smaller force of drones have been cloned and sent out against the allied Citadel races.
