    After the First Contact War of 2157, humanity began expanding in the galaxy. In recognition of their expansion, the Council granted Earth their own embassy in 2165, causing tension with the batarians.

    The batarians then started encouraging pirates and mercenaries to attack human colonies. Hostilities peaked with the Skylian Blitz of 2176, an attack on Elysium which was repelled by the Alliance.

    The Alliance retaliated with a crushing assault on the moon of Torfan which had long been used by the batarians as a staging ground in the Verge. Defeated, the batarians retreated to their own system.

    While other batarians were content with simple piracy, Balak sought revenge by targeting the human colony of Terra Nova in 2183. The colony planned to mine Asteroid X57 by pulling it into it's orbit.

    Balak led a terrorist group onto X57, hijacking the asteroid and taking the science team hostage. The batarians thought it was a slave grab, but Balak planned to direct X57 to crash into the colony.

    The Alliance contacted Commander Shepard. Shepard landed on X57 and shut down the fusion torches propelling the asteroid before confronting Balak and his men. Balak rigged a bomb to kill the hostages.

    In order to save the hostages Shepard would have to let Balak go. After which Balak returns to the batarian homeworld Khar'shan to elude capture. He remained there until the reapers invaded in 2186.

    He hacked Council transmissions to help mobolize his fleets. He accessed batarian codes from when they still had an embassy on the Citadel. Out of spite, he used the codes to comit acts of terrorism.

    He sabotaged the medicine in Huerta Memorial Hospital. Stagged a docking "accident" that resulted in the death of 117 humans. But it did not go unnoticed. C-sec is currently investigating the cause.
