  • Certainly. I must initially tell you, my English has often grammatical problems, so I apologize if my lexicon is incorrect. To begin, we must learn pronunciation. I will onomatopoeia the sounds as best I can into English. ä - sounds similar to the letter A, or 'ay' ü - 'oo' as in soon ö - 'oa' as in goat w - makes a 'v' sound ei - almost always an 'I' sound ie - almost always an 'E' sound

  • A few others that are complicated to explain, ch - this can be pronounced like in English during certain circumstance, but it is mostly something close to 'cgh'. It is very guttural, from the throat. sch - always pronounced exactly as it reads in English. A brief 's' followed by 'ch', similar to 'sh'. 'tsch' - the same as 'sch', but with 't'. Ensure you get the 't' sound in the word!

  • Guten Abend. I have some free time, so I think today is good for greetings and short phrases. Make sure you have the lesson from yesterday where you may quickly reference to it. I will start in next comment, so I have room to print.

  • To begin, here are common greetings/goodbyes. All but 'Guten Tag' may be shortened to the last word, eg 'Guten Morgen'>'Morgen'. Guten Morgen - Good morning, used any time before midday. Guten Tag - 'Good day', used any time during the day, but typical aroud midday Guten Abend - 'Good evening/afternoon', used after midday. Guten Nacht - 'Good night' used at night, but 'Guten Abend' is fine, too.

  • These may only be used to greet. Hallo. - 'Hello' Wie geht es dir? - 'How are you?' Wie geht's? - 'What's up?', used to greet friends. Grüß dich. - a very relaxed greeting. I hear it very rarely, as it is from more southern dialect. I am unsure how to translate, because it means, word over word, 'Greeting you'. I think it has lost it's origin meaning over time.

  • I seem to have forgotten some important pronunciations yesterday, so I will take a break from greeting to continue. ß - 'ss' a - 'ah' e - 'uh' er - I am unsure, but I think very close is 'aer', 'oor', or 'ure' ir - 'er' If i have forgotten any others, I will comment them later.

  • With this out of a way, let's finish with fare wells Auf Wiedersehen. - 'Goodbye', formal Tschüss. - 'Goodbye', relaxed. Bis morgen - 'See you tomorrow' Bis später - 'see you later Bis bald. - 'See you soon'. Mach's gut - 'Be well'. (Perhaps better translated to 'be careful' or 'take care'?)

  • I think that is enough for today, as I did not realize I would be translating this long, haha. Perhaps tomorrow we may translate some more common phrase. Also, if you are ever confuse with to pronounce a word, use the internet. There are many free language guides to help you.
