ĦSweetWater: More crew highlight. Diver. If you notice, that's only 1 point increase. Is that really useful? Is there a difference?

  • The answer to that is yes! It's not a big difference, mind you. In fact, there's only a tiny bit of improvement available. But sometimes, that's enough.

  • Case in point: I was using Giant Z, and was unable to dodge hits. It seems like just about everybody can hit me with hit rate at 90%. I was still winning battles, but it was very tough to go past 2-3 sinks. Add Diver, however, and hit rate went down to 30%. 4 enemy subs became doable.

  • That illustrate that a little bit can make a big difference. However, I would caution you to make that change immediately. You need to get a good handle of the sub first, before you add crews to it. You need to practice with the plain sub without modification to its fullest performance.

  • That's because SDSW is designed at compromise. You can't have it all. There is no such thing as the perfect sub. This is good. In version 1, there's mostly Walrus. Nowadays, we see a wide variety of subs, including the lesser Deep Manatee! It shows that the game is properly balanced. So, there's no bad sub anymore.

  • So, which is the best sub? The one that is customized *just for you*. That means plenty of practice using plain sub, then add a crew to see how it affects the performance. Make sure to keep an open mind. Some changes are really surprising.

  • My point is: if you don't keep a journal detailing your performance, you will most likely miss it. So, keep a journal. Keep a detailed record of your performance, and make appropriate improvements. See you in the water.
