Serious question about MK8 strategy: what's the deal with hang gliding? Should I try for as much air as possible? Or go in a straight line to the ground? I'm sure some genius has looked at values in the game code to figure out the best way... but I am clueless!

  • I always hang long, but on the inward drift bikes, speed multiplier is smaller than land. Anyway, I figure it's the same strategy as fire hopping as air has less friction in the game.

  • stay in the air, use it with light type for best out come.

  • Personally I just go with default, I think that's what the world record time trials do. I land early if there's a challenging turn coming up, and do it by holding up once for a long time right away, then let it glide itself the rest of the way. If you're already gliding, it doesn't seem to be worth it to hop off a second ramp (for example in Mario Kart Stadium.)

  • But maybe that only works for heavies, and like Seth says maybe more gliding is beneficial for other vehicles. I avoid it except for the mandatory jumps.

  • Staying in the air seems faster and has yielded better results for me..

  • Thanks for your comments. And now I feel silly for not checking the world record time trials! That is the best way to check which racing strategies work, I can't believe I didn't think of that.

  • I certainly FEEL faster when I'm getting as much air as possible. But sometimes I see people pass me on the ground...but who knows, maybe they are just coming off of a mushroom boost or something. Or they have a faster kart, or it's cheating AI.
