    I think he used rings in Heroes-Generations, when you beat the bosses in Colors (aside from the Egg Nega Wisp) it explodes and millions of rings fly out of it. There are also Chaos Emeralds but...

    those are hard to get and keep track of and when someone uses it for a transformation they scatter (flying in multiple different directions) to who knows where at random.

    We really don't know how long his plan takes, if there is no specific indication of how much time has passed for all we know Colors could have 2 months to a year after Unleashed . Maybe it's quick...
