    Generally, you want either a power or an element phial. When in axe mode, your main combo is infinite X. If you hold forward while doing that, you will do a forward stab instead of an upswing.

    as long as you gauge is yellow. In sword mode, the main combo is still X. You can hold forward to move forward during the downward strike. Pressing X+A then mashing X will do Element Discharge.

    sharpness isn't high enough. The only ways to switch modes during a combo are Pressing R after a forward stab in axe mode, and pressing R after an A sideswipe in sword mode.
