If I can only carry 256 hearts, why are there four digits?!

  • It's because of technical limitations. That said, I wonder why and how it was able to go past 255 (trivia: 255 is [usually] the highest number allowed in the 8-bit computer world)...

  • @SamusA2G I'm well aware of how NES games work. Each byte is a hexadecimal unit ranging from 00 to FF, or 255. My question is, why did they make it a four digit number if the maximum is only three?

  • As for how to go beyond 255, you would use a second byte to go along with it. Which, it almost seems that's they did here since the maximum is over 255, but only one higher.

  • Most bytes in NES games are either 1 or 0, anyway (on or off), so they probably have one byte that determines if you have any hearts (0 or 1) and another that determines how many you have (0O-FF).
