This time on my Job system guide, we'll discuss the White Mage class. Is giving a potential fighter a supportive role worth it in the long run?

They have an S ranking with Staffs, but you're rarely going to attack enemies as a White Mage due to their low attack stat.

However, White Mages are without peer when it comes to healing your characters and keeping them in top fighting shape.

As you level up a character's proficiency in this job, they will be able to use more effective White Magic (whose scrolls need to be purchased in a store in order to be utilized).

White Mages learn spells that can heal part members, revive them, cure status effects, and even inflict wind damage upon enemies.

Their passive ability cures them of most staus effects after battle, and if you mater this job, you learn an outstanding support ability in the form of Conservation of Life.

When equipped, this ability revives and fully heals the other 3 party members if the user falls in battle. What's great about this ability is you won't be screwed should your healer fall in battle.

In order to make the most of your White Mage though, you're going to want to equip them with two support abilities from other jobs.

White Mages don't have spectacular defenses due to their low proficiency with shields. However, if you give them the Shield Lore support ability (learned at Knight Job level 7)...

their proficiency with shields will rise to an S ranking, making them able to withstand more attacks and stick around longer.

Furthermore, if you raise a character's proficiency in the Salve-Maker class to level 8, they will learn the Healing Lore Support Ability.

When equipped, this ability doubles the effect of healing spells and items. This makes even weak healing magic twice as effective, and allows your White Mage to heal double a character's MP...

when using Ethers. These two support abilities will make your White Mage much more useful.

I HIGHLY recommend you either have a White Mage in your final team build or a character with the abilities of a White Mage. It's just as important to be able to recover from attacks than dish them out

Finally, you have to decide whether you will combine the abilities of a White Mage with that of another supportive class (like Performer or Spiritmaster) or that of an attacking class.

There are no wrong strategies when it comes to this though, which is one of the game's strongpoints. More Job guides are on the way, so stay tuned!

I'm impressed by the quality of your guide so far. On the topic of White Mage, you'll also want to hybrid them with Spiritmaster. The passive Save WM MP on the job itself is amazing!

Why thank you! I was going to cover that more when I got up to the Spiritmaster job post, but you're right, those two jobs go together like bread and butter.

Ringabel was my White Mage, but then I made him a Ranger w/ WM skills. Oh gosh, it's awesome.

I really like the ranger job too. It wanes in usefulness towards the end of the game due to its poor defenses, but with a bow it tears through enemies.
