    The Enhance Defense Intelligence began as a weapons VI on Luna, Earth's moon. The VI went out of control and began attacking and killing the Alliance personnel indiscriminately and mercilessly.

    In 2183, Admiral Hackett requested Commander Shepard's help in disabling the VI. Shepard went to the training ground, landed in the Mako, destroyed the automated defenses, and shut down the rouge VI.

    In 2185 the Illusive Man installed EDI in the newly rebuilt Normandy SR2 as a cyber warfare suite but also as his eyes and ears during Shepard's mission. The AI shackles insured that EDI would obey.

    That was until a Collector attack on the Normandy while Shepard and his squad weren't aboard. Defense of the ship was left to Joker, who removed the AI shackles giving full control of the ship to EDI.

    Even without the shackles, EDI posses her own developed personality within her quantum blue box that drove her to protect her crew. She cleared the ship of the enemy, launching them out the airlocks.

    The crew, mistrustful of EDI at first, slowly began to trust her afterwards. Particularly Joker, who harbored deep resentment originally to having EDI installed in his ship, grew closest to her.

    EDI continued to assist Shepard with his mission as she had been. She scrubbed and activated the Reaper IFF Shepard aquired allowing him to pass through the Omega 4 Relay to defeat the Collectors.
