  • Checkmate is a loss for the player checkmated, Stalemate is a draw

  • In a Checkmate, the King is put in Check and there is nothing he can do to escape, and he would be eaten in the next move. In a Stalemate, neither of the players can manage to defeat the other, a tie.

  • Stalemate: king IS NOT in check but would be if he makes any move, which is against rules (king is not allowed to move into check) Checkmate: King IS in check and also has no legal moves. Helpful?

  • No problem. I had trouble with stalemates for a while. I've learned that once you're in the endgame, try to only make moves that put the king in check. That way you can avoid a stalemate.

  • Especially if you find yourself chasing him around the board. If you get a lot less stalemates in the future, let me know. See ya'!
