Dang, Chaugmar! Even my most powerful attacks did only 1 point of damage and it took only a couple attacks to wipe out my party. I'm lvl44. Am I doing something wrong?

    You're attacking him when he's purple. Default the first turn he turns yellow, and then attack until he's purple again.

    Chaugmar is easy as long as you default until his shield is gone. I end up beating him in 3-6 turns.
