There's a logical reason why Sonic doesn't have a neck. If he did, the weight of his head would squash his neck and he would choke.

Actually sonic characters do have necks. they're just short and Knuckles new design is supposed to emphasize his role as the muscle of the team because in Sonic Adventure his theme song made no sense
