    I think I know how. I did this a few times before: Reset the game, hold ↑ during the Sega screen. If you got it right, then a ring sound will play when Knuckles collects the third emerald in the opening cutscene. When he does that, immediately press START. Choose your character, and there you go! But sometimes, this code is unresponsive. I dunno why, it just...is.
