He was still in his pajamas, though the muck had soaked straight through them. Wet and cold and shivering, Evan Wilmington cast about.

The sodden ground around him reflected the sanguine sky, the many puddles like pools of blood. Here and there a few squat trees projected from the sludge, old and gnarled and barren, perhaps petrified. A swirling fog surrounded him, thickening in the distance to an impenetrable haze.

And looming directly behind was an old mansion. It was smaller than Surry House and horribly run down, its many pillars warped and the upper story sagging. A pair of large oriel windows projected from the top floor. Together they resembled a pair of misshapen eyes. As Evan gazed up into them, he thought he glimpsed something in one. A silhouette. A face.

"Faye!" he cried. The likeness dissolved back into the darkness, so quickly he had to wonder if he'd seen it at all. It could have been a trick of the light, a chance reflection shimmering across the pane.

But it was all he had. Hope and fear and love all swelled together in his heart, and Evan uttered her name again, not calling out this time but whispering, a plea, a prayer. He drew in a heavy breath. Then he walked to the porch and started up the rotten steps. . .

I've decided to create an expanded continuity based on "Boxed Devil." The next entry will be a novella or a visual novel or a point-and-click adventure game, which I'll publish for free online. This will be a long term project that'll probably take at least a year or two to complete. Once it's done, I'll be announcing it first here on Miiverse, so anyone interested can check it out. Thanks! :)

Thanks very much, silence! :D I still had some ideas I wanted to develop from it, so it'll be fun to expand on those. Just gotta find the time now! Real life has a way of sidelining projects like this. Real life is a jerk sometimes.

  • J, a great idea to continue your story, which way ever. I was engaged in your horror tale, but a little disappointed of the quick ending. Then again I thought that I am too critical, because this is only a very short story here. Now I'm happy to hear you continue the story, where you could explain more of the backgrounds. Good luck :)

Thanks, summerwind! :D I appreciate the feedback on the story! I wanted it to be short and jarring, and leave a lot of questions dangling, the same way real mysteries and tragedies often do. But you're exactly right! Dramatically, it's kind of disappointing. So the next part will explain more about the history and nature of the jack-in-the-box. Thanks again! :)

  • Thank you J for all the great work and drawings! To criticize is always easy ;) I am a 'big' reader, in my youth I read tons of horror tales, now I'm more into fantasy and other novels. I'm looking forward for the continuation of your story!

When I've been working on something for a while I have a hard time viewing it objectively. So feedback, constructive criticism, and advice are always hugely appreciated! It all helps me improve! :)
