So.... when you are about to die and you know you can't recover don't bother with the shield. Even if it holds you alive for an another level, you'll die anyways with the stronger attackers since you only earn money when you destroy the attackers. Also, having less money when you finally die will hurt your score.

    But you earn money after each wave and shields can get you there more cheaply. Another idea is to survive on shields as far as it's cost effective and then advance one more level with your a-bomb.

    No you don't. You only earn money & score on waves when you kill ships. If you are over matches and can't even kill one, u will max score to just sell everything
