  When the original Normandy was constructed, the Illusive Man farsaw the impact it would have, the importance the ship would have. He embeded spies on Arcturus Station and obtained the blueprints of the ship. He then began work on constructing his own Normandy vessel, with several improvements only a private organisation like Cerberus could fund.

  The Normandy SR-2 is nearly twice the size of the original Normandy, which requires an even larger Tantalus Drive Core. But because of its increased size, the ship is no longer capable of landing on a planet, so Cerberus included the Kodiak drop shuttle in the hangar of the ship to transport the crew to areas even the previous Normandy could not go.

  The new Normandy was also given a full research laboratory, observation deck, EXO office, and a new top of the line Quantum Entanglement Communicator that connects directly with the Illusive Man. An on-board AI called the Enhance Defense Intelligence was installed along with an AI core. EDI is a cyberwarfare suite, operates the ship's defenses, and assists with piloting.

  In addition to the numerous tech upgrades, Cerberus added several luxuries to the Normandy SR-2. The Captain's Cabin was significantly improved, with a new larger bed, fish tank, window, and full bathroom. But new spacious living quarters and expanded mess with a full kitchen were provided for the crew. They even installed leather seats for the pilot's chair.

  In 2185, two year after the destruction of the original Normandy, Miranda Lawson succeeded in reviving Commander Shepard. At which point, the new ship was given over to Shepard who officially named it the Normandy SR-2. Cerberus painted the name on the side and added Cerberus colors. Shepard took command of the ship and used it to take down the Collectors.

  During the mission, the Normandy SR-2 was improved further by the crew Shepard recruited. Samara and Thane doubled the amount of fuel & probes they could carry, while Garrus installed the new, incredibly powerful Thanix Magnetic-Hydrodynamic Weapon developed by the Turians after the Battle of the Citadel by studying recovered pieces of Sovereign, to develop a miniature version of it's main cannon.

  Miranda improved the ship's scanner. Jacob installed the asari-made Silaris heavy armor made super dense by taking carbon nanotube sheets woven with diamond Chemical Vapor Deposition and crushing them with Mass Effect fields. While Tali added Cyclonic Barrier Technology capable of deflecting incoming attacks by spinning the kinetic shield surrounding the ship.

  The ship with it's numerous improvements were all supported by Cerberus, so the Illusive Man kept an eye on his investment. Cameras were installed all over the Normandy, and Miranda made regular progress reports. Until, the completion of the mission at which time Shepard stole the Normandy and turned it over to the Alliance. EDI cut all contact from Cerberus and ignored all shut down orders.

  In the hands of the Alliance the Normandy was claimed by Admiral David Anderson who intended to use it as his mobile command center for the upcoming war with the Reapers. In addition to modifying the ship to fit in line with Alliance regulations, several retrofits were made to the vessel over the next six months to make it even more formidable than ever before.
