I think that maybe Nintendo released this as a trial run for pokemon red and blue on the eShop. Because of the similarities in structure and story we might just see old pokemon games released on virtual console.

  • i think that will happen too also i think donkey kong land 1-3 and game and watch gallery 3 soon to i think around early 2015

  • There's one huge problem with that. Connectivity makes up a huge part of main series Pokemon. There has been no multiplayer feature in any GB VC game. Unless that is changed, it will be impossible to get the other version's Pokemon or Pokemon that evolve by trading. Plus, we have the remakes now.

  • I agree that it's a trial run, but not for the reason you think it is. Unless I'm mistaken, the connectivity and "card pop" features on this game are disabled, aren't they? Those functions are VERY similar to red/blues, so if this does well they might take a chance on VC solo Pokemon.

  • Hm. Card Pop, didn't that use Inferred? And not a Game Link Cable? The real issue is trying to emulate the Game Link Cable over a wireless connection.

  • Well what about 3D classics? They're old NES games that have been optimized for 3DS the same principles should technically still apply. And they could do custom 3DS trading content.

  • I think Red and Blue are pretty unlikely. Even setting aside the connectivity issues that have been raised already, the code is a complete mess. I can't imagine Game Freak wants to go back and work with it again. FireRed and LeafGreen, maybe. But Red and Blue....? I doubt it.
