    Sorry! The red rings are like keys. Collect all 5 in each stage to unlock bonus stages. Complete each stage to get a chaos emerald.Get all 7 to get Super Sonic. p.s, the specail stages are a pain.

    The red rings unlock an extra stage in each world. Get all the red rings in all the extra stages to unlock a harder version of the final boss.

    Ly is wrong. To get to the special stages to get the chaos emerald just finish a stage with more then 50 rings.
