Question

you start off with red hearts, they turn blue thru out the game, i assumed i was banking lives, but it turns out its not, i got low on health and got game over.. what are the blue heart for?

    most likely a limit to how many colors the NES could display at any one given moment. yea, that was a thing back then! see how the hearts and sky are the same color? the hearts probably changed so they can do the sky in that color

    also, hearts are not for health. each heart unlocks a new move you can do.

    They change color with, what is now known as, the skybox. So they are different colors on different levels.
