found this by accident - easy way to 99 lives in world 2.1 - on the last run into the boss go to the 3rd tunnel on the right, grab 4 extra lives, then hit wall or spikes, repeat at 3 extra lives each!

Or you can save yoshis in the Yoshi DLC, they give you lives, Its 3 lives per yoshi I think..
