    not very realistic for the near future. if they were to do that, all of those HeartGold, Platinum, etc. still on the shelves would never be sold.

    not true, they would be sacrificing the potential sale which would cover cost of cartridge, manufacturing cost of cart and packaging, as well as profit. There's no way they just take it off the shelf.
