The additional subs have been really helpful, as have the additional recruitable crew -- but if you're having to ask this question, it means you're not yet convinced about a purchase. Wait on it.

I would say buy it! It's really cool. But I also suggest to wait it out a little, to prepare for the AWESOMENESS!

Not so much stronger (I've been taken down by free-version ships frequently), as much as they're more customizable to your liking, especially with more crew slots. I like going with high dive stats.
